The Organization for Reinforcement Contingencies with Animals (ORCA) was founded in
2000, in the Department of Behavior Analysis at the University of North Texas. ORCA
is a not-for-profit student organization advised by Dr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz. Our mission
is to enhance the lives of animals and their guardians through behavior analytic research
and to inform the public about these discoveries.
We host an annual conference which brings together experts, students, and the public
for a conversation about advances in animal welfare and training. ORCA students also
participate in local community service projects and collaborate with nearby zoos and
sanctuaries concerning animal behavior problems and general animal welfare. Undergraduate
and graduate students work on a volunteer basis to provide these services. This arrangement
allows institutions and the public to benefit from new discoveries and technology
from the behavior analytic community while providing students with beneficial real-life
experiences in the field.
After completing their graduate or undergraduate degree at the University of North
Texas, ORCA students are well prepared for Ph.D programs and further education or
for working in various animal-related fields, including at zoos, aquariums, animal
rescue organizations, and as pet trainers.
